Case Study: The Art Behind the Lens: Developing Still Life Styling Courses

As a seasoned still life stylist, the founder of The Art of Still Life Styling, Erica Pulley knew firsthand that her career path was far from conventional.

Like Erica, many find out about still life styling by chance and are unsure how to improve their skills or transition into the industry. In this case study, we will review the uphill battle that many stylist’s assistants and stylists face and what top-notch still life styling courses look like to them.

Challenge(s)

As stated before, many creatives are unaware of still life styling. According to our survey, many of these creatives landed in the field of still life styling by chance. Common beginnings include working sample closets, starting out as a fashion stylist and working in production. The lack of knowledge of still life styling often leaves creatives unprepared when it comes to working in diverse settings such as fashion, beauty, accessories, etc.

Insights

So, what would stylist’s assistants and stylists be looking for in a still life styling course? Through a few interviews, participants expressed a desire to learn a variety of concepts such as learning different types of styling ( eg. belts vs. bags) and learning folding techniques for garments. Other preferences included time management skills with still life styling and live feed sharing screens where students can receive feedback in real-time.

To bridge the educational gap, The Art of Still Life Styling has created an online learning experience that is both comprehensive and interactive.
